Patrice mentioned a cultural block on Hell and Heartaches and I think we must all be feeling it.
Preteen Violence – Mindless Self Indulgence
People always talk about the golden years of the 50s and 60s, how people were happier then, as if that even makes any sense considering how the world is less fucked up now.
But I suppose the reason people say this is not necessarily because people were happier then, but more so because people expect too much now. The standard of living is higher, the quality of life is better and of course I am talking about the United States… If you’re confused about wtf I am going on about, what I mean is, we’ve been taught and brainwashed to believe in this liberal society that we can do whatever we set our minds to. The more we move forward culturally the less glass ceilings there appear to be… the more attainable things seem.
Many of us think of our lives as a “work in progress” these are the things we want to do, the things we are going to do, as if one day all of a sudden we’ll be done and our lives will be complete. While it’s nice to encourage our children or whatever, we don’t live in a perfect society, even though our society would like to convince us that we can become perfect.
When we tell our generation that they can do whatever the fuck they want, those lovely little tidbits get mixed up with all the other shit. It gets mixed up with all the Botox commercials, with HEAD ON APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD, with Miley Cyrus, with the NEW 90210, with 2 girls 1 Cup, Lindsay Lohan, crystal meth, fake tits and vaginal rejuvenation, with fame and fortune… and when all of these things get shoved into our faces, when there are youtube celebrities and American Idol, all we see is the payoff and not the work. We see the praise for the fake tits, but not the baggage that comes with them and even when we do we are too stupid, young and arrogant so we ignore it.
Eyelash Curlers and Butcher Knives – Jeffree Star
I hated high school because everyone was sad, I hated college because everyone was sad, I don’t like work because everyone is sad, everyone is sad because it seems as though everyone else is having so much fun. Seeing all of your friends update their photos on facebook, seeing Paris Hilton get famous for doing nothing, seeing the racy, far-fetched drama on Gossip Girl.
Everyone is more interesting than you so get a nose job. Cut yourself so you can be apart of something.
Everyone will know who you are and will be really sad that they didn’t see how great you were if you shoot-up a Walgreens.
Now of course there are still legitimate things to be upset about, but if my generation wasn’t truly melodramatic the word “emo” wouldn’t be household slang.
As the world becomes more tolerant, there’s more technology, more intelligence, more plastic surgery, more everything–as things get better–everything else we don’t like seems a whole lot worse.
I’m not saying be complacent, I’m just saying being happy shouldn’t be so fucking hard.
I suspect the secret to a happy life is knowing when to get drunk, when to take a nap and when to quit a job.
Please don’t ever get a nose job.
